Martha’s top five summer movies
This list was kinda hard to make, because as strange as it sounds, i don’t watch movies very often. I prefer watching videos on YouTube or reading a book that gives you the ability to imagine while I wouldn’t watch a movie without it being suggested by someone with similar preferences. However, here are my five favourite summer movies and movies that have a summer-y essence to them (because I don’t like any other purely summer movie)
1. Call me by your name - 2017
If you haven’t watched this movie already, I definitely recommend you do this summer. The chemistry between the main characters is out of this world and the aesthetic of this movie makes you feel nostalgic of times you haven’t lived and places you haven’t been to. I was left disappointed at the end for not being in Italy and the film not being longer. I wish more movies like that will be produced so that they can bless our eyes and hearts.
2. Lolita - 1962
Be aware that this movie is viewed from the prespective of a ped0phile so don't watch it if you are unsettled by this subject, It's based on the book Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov (which I didn't know before watching the movie) and I although I haven't read the book, I believe it is one of the best movies based on books. This movie has become a controversial subject as it is believed by many that it glamourises and romaticises a ped0philic relationship, but I think it shouldn't be treated as such when it is based on the thoughts of the abuser. Lolita didn't act s3xually or inappropriately, everything was in his sick mind, so please don't make this movie something it isn't <3
3. Hot summer nights - 2017
Yes, you are starting to see a pattern and yes I love Timothee Chalamet. I believe it is a very underrated movie and it deserves more recognition. It has an 80s/90s vibe and it just adds to it.
4. Pulp Fiction - 1994
Although not classified as a summer movie, I believe it has a bit of summer escence in it. The action, the locations, the aesthetic and everything just reminds me of summer. I love this movie, not exactly sure why, it actually started after me being interested in a poster and then deciding to watch it. After watching it, it had already won my love but I wondered, what is the moral of pulp fiction? google answered: "The lesson I take away from Pulp Fiction is simply “Do what's right.” On Butch's story he's asked to throw a fight for a huge amount of money from Marcellus Wallace. He does what's right and not only wins the fight but he accidentally kills his opponent."
5. Us - 2019
Be aware this is a horror movie. I love thriller and horror movies for no apparent reason and the fact that they don't keep me up at night make them easier to watch. However, this movie creeped me out so much and I believe it is worth watching by horror lovers. The plot is amazing and the actress, who plays both her and her "shadow", is so talented and has put a lot of effort and dedication and done a lot of research to support this role.
Katerina’s top five summer movies
Same as Martha, I'm not a movie person either. I prefer spending time watching videos on youtube or listen to music when I have some free time. I haven't watched many movies, so I'm really thankful to my friend for suggesting me some great summer movies, which are listed below:
1. Mamma Mia-
A love story. A Greek island. A ton of fun. Realistically, Mamma Mia is the ultimate summer movie. Sophie is getting married, and wants her father to walk her down the aisle. The problem? Her mother, Donna, has kept her father's identity from her. Sophie invites all three potential fathers to their hotel in Greece, and so begins a story of love and secrets—all set to the music of ABBA.
2. Before Sunrise-1994
Jesse, an American, and Céline, a French student, meet on a train. Over the course of the next eight hours, they stroll around Vienna, and realize their connection is special and undeniable. But will these two wanderers ever meet again?
3. Stand by Me-1986
Director Rob Reiner's 1986 coming-of-age film is adapted from Stephen King's novella, The Body. On a Labor Day weekend in 1959, four young neighborhood boys go on a quest to find the body of a boy who was hit and killed by a train. Sure, the concept of mortality is a bit dark and morbid, but after watching this one, you'll find yourself longing for the simpler times of childhood.
4. My Girl-1991
Thomas J. and 11-year-old Vada conquer that fate-filled summer of 1972. The 1991 coming-of-age story is about two close friends—and, at times, childhood crushes—who enjoy riding bicycles and making lasting memories together.
5. Grease-1978
Grease follows the summer fling and beachside romance between teenagers Danny Zuko and his Australian love interest, Sandy Olsson. It's a classic rock 'n' roll film with catchy tunes and an addictive storyline about high-schoolers struggling with relationships and identity.
Martha’s top five summer songs
Songs, on the other hand, and music in general are something I’m passionate about and of course, easier for me to recommend. The only difficulty I faced was silencing that voice in my head that constantly recommended LDR songs and I thought I had to list some more artists. I suggest listening to all of these songs but of course everyone has different tastes in music and I don’t expect you to like them :)
1. Doin’ time - Lana Del Rey
If you’ve known me for a while, you know how much I love Lana Del Rey. I think it’s one of the most summer-y songs she’s ever produced and it’s truly unique.
2. 505 - Arctic Monkeys
Okay, okay, I can’t say this in a different way, this song is a masterpiece. If you can listen to the part when he goes “BUT I CRUMBLE COMPLETELY WHEN YOU CRY” without even getting goosebumps, you are invincible.
3. Radio Varsavia - Franco Battiato
(yes, I discovered this song through Cmbyn and I have no idea what the first image says although I wish I did) This song is an absolute must to listen to, Italian is a very nostalgic language by itself and the song is so beautiful you don’t need to understand it.
4. The Beach - The Neighbourhood
This song is chef’s kiss. I just love it and have nothing else to say.
5. West Coast - Lana Del Rey
I truly resisted re-recommending another LDR song, I really did, but this is beyond my limits. What can I say about this woman?
Katerina’s top five summer songs
1.Duke Dumont - Ocean Drive
I've made so many fun and beautiful summer moments listening to this song, I promise it won't let you down.
2.Shakira - Hips Don't Lie
Childhood memories trying to dance like Shakira.A song to travel back in time.
3.Pitbull ft. Jennifer Lopez & Claudia Leitte - We Are One (Ole Ola)
Okay this may look weird, but it's one of my favorite summer songs because of World Cup, which I watch with my dad.
4. 5 Seconds of Summer - Wildflower
I have no words for this song and its music video, it's a chill song that you can listen it anytime and remind you of summer.
5. Gotye - Somebody That I Used To Know
Close your eyes and imagine you're listening to this song while laying at the beach..That's what I'm talking about.
