Let's Talk About Classics

Hi all! I am @Alejandralahey and today I bring you a very special article that I really wanted to do.

But first, I remind you that you can follow us on Instagram and on our website! I leave the link to everything: https://thehoneyclub.carrd.co/

During these last months, I have read many classic books and the truth is that I have discovered a new genre that I am passionate about, so I have thought about sharing these 6 classics that I have enjoyed so much!

I'm going to write them in order, first the "least" ones I liked and then my favorites ... I hope you like them!

✧✧

6- Sense and Sensibility | Jane Austen.

2,5/ 5 ✩✩

The novel follows the three Dashwood sisters as they must move with their widowed mother from the estate on which they grew up, Norland Park. Because Norland is passed down to John, the product of Mr. Dashwood's first marriage, and his young son, the four Dashwood women need to look for a new home. They have the opportunity to rent a modest home, Barton Cottage, on the property of a distant relative, Sir John Middleton. There they experience love, romance, and heartbreak. The novel is likely set in southwest England, London, and Sussex between 1792 and 1797.

My Opinion: I love Jane Austen, I really enjoy her writing and how she describes the feelings of the characters. Although I did like this book, it was the one that I enjoyed the least of the author, since I did not understand or empathize with any of the protagonists, which made it difficult to follow the story.

Still, it's a fairly quick book to read, and reading Jane Austen is always a hit.

5- Persuasion | Jane Austen

3,5 /5 ✩✩✩

Is the last novel fully completed by Jane Austen. It was published at the end of 1817, six months after her death. The story concerns Anne Elliot, a young Englishwoman of 27 years, whose family is moving to lower their expenses and get out of debt. They rent their home to an Admiral and his wife. The wife’s brother, Navy Captain Frederick Wentworth, had been engaged to Anne in 1806, and now they meet again, both single and unattached, after no contact in more than seven years. This sets the scene for many humorous encounters as well as a second, well-considered chance at love and marriage for Anne in her second "bloom".

My Opinion: I read this book a few days ago, and I have to say that at first it was very difficult for me to understand what was happening, to know who all the characters were, but when I started to familiarize myself with the story, I read it in less than two days. Unlike Sense and Sensibility, I love the protagonist, Anne, and I really enjoyed the book, especially because how different all the characters were from each other.

4- Little Women | Louisa May Alcott

4 / 5 ✩✩✩✩

Little Women is a novel by American author Louisa May Alcott (1832–1888) which was originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869. Alcott wrote the book over several months at the request of her publisher. The story follows the lives of the four March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—and details their passage from childhood to womanhood. It is loosely based on the lives of the author and her three sisters. Scholars classify it as an autobiographical or semi-autobiographical novel.

My Opinion: What can I say about this book? It is simply gorgeous. It is one of my best readings this year, and it has made me rethink many things in addition to proposing many goals. My role model from now on is Jo, and definitely Little Women is a novel that you have to read if you haven't already. Also as a plus, the new movie is amazing!

3- Wuthering Heights | Emily Brontë

4´5/5 ✩✩✩✩

Is a novel by Emily Brontë published in 1847 under her pseudonym "Ellis Bell". Brontë's only finished novel, it was written between October 1845 and June 1846 . Wuthering Heights and Anne Brontë's Agnes Gray were accepted by publisher Thomas Newby before the success of her sister Charlotte's novel Jane Eyre. After Emily's death, Charlotte edited a posthumous second edition in 1850.

Although Wuthering Heights is now a classic of English literature, contemporary reviews were deeply polarized; it was controversial because of its unusually stark depiction of mental and physical cruelty, and it challenged Victorian ideas about religion, morality, class, and a woman's place in society.

My Opinion: Another book that you need to read. I must admit that I have read this book twice, and that the first time, I did not understand much, so reading the novel again has been like reading it for the first time. It is such a unique story, so special, something that you will not read again, it is incredible, and it also talks about many topics that can cause controversy and debate, making it even more interesting.

2- Pride and Prejudice | Jane Austen

4´6 / 5 ✩✩✩✩

Pride and Prejudice is a romantic novel of manners written by Jane Austen in 1813. The novel follows the character development of Elizabeth Bennet, the dynamic protagonist of the book who learns about the repercussions of hasty judgments and comes to appreciate the difference between superficial goodness and actual goodness. Its humour lies in its honest depiction of manners, education, marriage, and money during the Regency era in Great Britain. Mr. Bennet of Longbourn estate has five daughters, but his property is entailed and can only be passed to a male heir. His wife also lacks an inheritance, so his family will be destitute upon his death. Thus it is imperative that at least one of the girls marry well to support the others, which is a motivation that drives the plot. The novel revolves around the importance of marrying for love, not for money or social prestige, despite the communal pressure to make a wealthy match.

My Opinion: This book finally appears! It is the first classic I read, and therefore I have a lot of affection for it. Again, the protagonist is splendid and there is so much to learn from her, and her ideas. This book, as many of you may know, is perfect to re-read it a thousand times and keep falling in love with the story over and over again.

1- Jane Eyre | Charlotte Brontë

5 / 5 ✩✩✩✩✩

The novel revolutionized prose fiction by being the first to focus on its protagonist's moral and spiritual development through an intimate first-person narrative, where actions and events are colored by a psychological intensity. Charlotte Brontë has been called the "first historian of the private consciousness", and the literary ancestor of writers like Proust and Joyce. The book contains elements of social criticism with a strong sense of Christian morality at its core, and it is considered by many to be ahead of its time because of Jane's individualistic character and how the novel approaches the topics of class, sexuality, religion, and feminism. It, along with Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, is one of the most famous romance novels of all time.

My Opinion: I don't know how to put into words how much I love this novel, how much I like Jane and Mr Rochester and how many times I would re-read this novel.

It is among my 5 favorite books and the truth is that you should read it as soon as possible! You really won't regret it.

I hope you have discovered new books! Thank you for reading this far.

See you next week!
